Anthropic Backers Bank Billions Ahead of Historic Public Debut

Early investors and late-stage giants stand to see massive returns as the AI leader prepares for a potentially record-setting stock market entry.

The artificial intelligence sector is bracing for a seismic shift in wealth distribution as Anthropic moves toward a public listing this year.

With a projected valuation reaching up to $2 trillion, the upcoming IPO promises substantial gains for both early-stage and later-stage investors. Even if the company trades at its most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by key venture capital firms and individual backers already represent billions of dollars in paper wealth. According to Bloomberg data, the financial positions of several prominent investors have expanded dramatically since their initial entries into the company.

Eric Schmidt, the former Google chief, entered the market during the 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. His current holding of approximately 1% of the company now carries a valuation of nearly $10 billion based on the latest private pricing. This early entry has positioned him to capture significant upside as the firm approaches its public debut.

Late-stage institutional investors have also secured massive positions. Iconiq, which wrote a $6 billion check last year when Anthropic was valued at $183 billion, now holds a stake worth $17 billion. This investment has the potential to double its value once the company goes public. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over $1 billion in total, resulting in a position currently valued at $14 billion.

Newer entrants have also seen rapid appreciation. Sequoia first backed the AI lab earlier this year at a $380 billion valuation. Its $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, effectively doubling its investment amount in a short timeframe. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and added another $400 million. Although Kutcher departed the firm this year to launch a new venture, the original stake is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher’s departure marks a change in the firm’s leadership structure.

Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic among venture capital firms. It invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate how rapidly valuations can escalate in the AI sector, though the final returns for all backers will depend on the execution of the IPO and market reception in the coming months.
