OpenAI Chases Record-Breaking Private Round

New reports suggest the AI giant is prioritizing a massive private funding round over an immediate public listing, potentially reshaping the tech landscape.

The race to dominate artificial intelligence is accelerating into uncharted financial territory.

According to sources cited by CNBC, OpenAI is in advanced discussions to secure a new private funding tranche worth up to $30 billion. This potential capital injection would value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The round is reportedly being led by Coatue, with significant participation from investors based in the United Arab Emirates. This development suggests a strategic pivot away from the immediate public markets, at least for the moment.

This latest round of negotiations follows a similar report from Bloomberg issued just one month ago. At that time, the outlet claimed OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Because terms remain under active negotiation, both news organizations note that the final figures could shift before the deal is closed. There is also a specific angle regarding the UAE investors; the funding may be tied to a separate agreement designed to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. The company itself has declined to comment on the details.

If OpenAI successfully closes this round at the projected figures, it would cement its status as the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would set a significantly higher benchmark for its future initial public offering. The company has already filed confidential paperwork for an IPO as of June. This filing came after a March funding round that valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion on a post-money basis. A jump to the $1.25 trillion mark would represent a substantial leap in market perception.

The implications of such a high valuation extend beyond OpenAI’s own balance sheet. It could place additional pressure on Anthropic, a rival AI lab that many believe is on the verge of a public debut. Rumors indicate that Anthropic’s public S-1 filing could appear at any time. According to CNBC, Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its entry into the public markets. This ambitious pricing strategy follows a $65 billion raise in May, which valued the company at $965 billion. Many observers had viewed that May round as the final major private capital event before Anthropic’s IPO. Like its competitor, Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June.

As these two leading AI labs maneuver through these complex financial structures, the question remains whether the private market can sustain such extreme valuations. The interplay between private funding and public listing strategies will likely define the next phase of the AI industry’s growth.
